Susan Martin-Serra is the owner and principal artist at Belvedere. Susan began her career in ceramic art while studying art at California State University at Fullerton where she earned an M.A. degree in illustration and M.F.A. in ceramics. During those years, Susan worked as a freelance artist creating designs for a prominent California tile manufacturer. During the summer of 1997, she studied “maiolica” painting in Florence, Italy. Always thirsty for knowledge, Susan continues taking master classes and carefully selected workshops to improve and broaden her skills. She has taught ceramics at the college level and continues teaching through an apprenticeship program at Belvedere. Current apprentices are Ellen and Tim Swartz, who are learning studio practices and assisting in production work.
Susan says “working with clay is peaceful; it slows you down and grounds you. Its formlessness spells out endless creative possibilities. The opportunity to work in three dimensions gives greater latitude for the expression of both the inner and outer worlds of human experience and art can be seen as a metaphor for what is ethereal and ever changing, yet eternal and of the earth.”
The inspiration behind Belvedere’s unique creations is primarily derived from the beauty of the studio’s surroundings in the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado where nature provides an endless source of beauty and creative energy. Susan also finds her dreams to be an important source of subject matter and often creates art works that are reflections of her inner thoughts and ideas.
