This section features Susan’s vessels, platters and containers which are highly organic and stylized to express movement and emotion. The work is hand-coiled in the case of the vessels, whereas her platters are slab-built with delicate hand-formed feet. The shape of each object is determined by the story or imagery that it is intended to depict. The inspiration for each piece begins with a dream, an event from daily life, or a special idea or situation that Susan wants to share. Generally, the process begins with a quick drawing to get the idea down on paper. Later a color rendering of the overall design and vessel form is created to effectively support the vision. Susan uses several techniques to paint and glaze her pieces, including maiolica (for earthenware pieces) low and high fire underglazes and select glaze colors.
